Tales from the Front (44) tells the story of Harold Charles Downton, a native of Victorian Bournemouth, who fought in the Great War. A caddy on the resort’s golf courses, he joined the county militia before enlisting with the First Dorsets. The battalion reached France in October 1914 and endured its first winter in the trenches. Downton survived the mud, cold, and exhaustion of the Western Front, but not the poison gas released at Hill 60 in May 1915.
