Tales from the Front (18) tells the story of George F. Payne, a Bournemouth-born man who fought in the Great War. He had served earlier as a professional soldier with the Hampshire Regiment, re-enlisting on mobilisation. Payne, 32, died in Boulogne Hospital from wounds suffered on November 4th, fighting in Ploegsteert Wood, part of the 1st Battle of Ypres.
Tales from the Front (17) tells the story of Charles Frederick Brown, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. He joined the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, and fough during the 1st Battle of Ypres. He fell at Gheluvelt, an area lying 10 km to the south-east of Ypres, November 1st 1914.
Tales from the Front (16) tells the story of William Albert Pounds, a Bournemouth-born man who fought in the Great War. Pounds, a professional soldier, died in the fighting around Ploegsteert (‘Plugstreet’) Wood, part of the 1st Battle of Ypres, on November 1st, 1914.
Tales from the Front (15) tells the story of Henry Albert Newman, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. As a teenager, Corporal Newman had worked as an errand boy while living in Winton. He enlisted with the 9th Lancers at Weymouth. Newman, 27, fell during the defence of Messines and Wytschaete, October 30th, 1914.
Tales from the Front (14) tells the story of George Francis Slade Hague, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. Hague (sometimes known as Egg) enlisted with the 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment. He served in India before the war, but fell in Flanders at Ypres.
Tales from the Front (13) tells the story of Henry Walter Dolman, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. A former gardener, Private Dolman, serving with the 1st Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment, fell on October 22nd, 1914, at La Bassee.
Tales from the Front (12) tells the story of Henry Charles Hopkins, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. Private Hopkins, a former fruit seller serving with the 1st Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment, fell on October 13th, 1914, at La Bassee.
Tales from the Front (11) tells the story of Charles George Morris, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. A Private serving with the 1st Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment, he fell on October 13th, 1914, at La Bassee. He may have witnessed the first execution for desertion.
Tales from the Front (10) tells the story of Walter Henry Linham, a Bournemouth native who fought in the Great War. A sawyer, who served with the 1st Dorsetshire Battalion, he fell on October 13th, 1914, at La Bassee.
Tales from the Front (9) tells the story of William James Franklin, Bournemouth-born, who fought in the Great War. A postman, serving with the 1st Dorsetshire Battalion, Lance-Corporal Franklin fell on October 12th, 1914, at La Bassee.
