He had served earlier as a professional soldier with the Hampshire Regiment, re-enlisting on mobilisation. Payne, 32, died in Boulogne Hospital from wounds suffered on November 4th, fighting in Ploegsteert Wood, part of the 1st Battle of Ypres.
