Geography of Bournemouth casualties

Bournemouth natives fought and fell in several parts of the world during the global conflict of 1914-1918. At first, fighting took place in Western Europe. The British participated in a continental war for the first time since Waterloo, 99 years before. Soon after the declaration of war, the British Expeditionary Force arrived in France and moved into Belgium. The mobile warfare that occurred in the early months soon became a stalemate in North-Eastern France. This would last until 1918. British troops also encountered their German counterparts in East Africa. After Turkey entered the war as a German ally, new fronts opened where Bournemouth natives fought and died. The Ottoman conflict involved the British in Mesopotamia, Gallipoli, and Palestine. No easy victory awaited the British in their fight against Turkish forces. Disasters occurred in Mesopotamia (Kut) and in Europe (Gallipoli). Bournemouth natives fell in their numbers at both locations.
