His parents had crossed the Atlantic in search of better prospects, yet Albert’s path carried him east: first to India with the 2nd Dorsets, then to France with the 1st Battalion. On Hill 60 in May 1915, poison gas ended his life.
Tales from the Front (38) tells the story of Albert Applin, a native of Victorian Bournemouth, who fought in the Great War. Private Applin may have served for a brief period with the Grenadier Guards but took the medical to join the First Dorsets on August 11th, 1914, a few days after the declaration of war. He inhaled poisoned gas at Hill 60 on May 1st, 1915, and made it to the hospital, but did not survive.
Tales from the Front (37) tells the story of Edgar Frank Williams, a native of Victorian Bournemouth, who fought in the Great War. Private Williams, a motor mechanic, served with the First Battalion, Dorset Regiment. On May 1st, 1915, the teenager went missing in action on Hill 60, another plausible victim of the gas attack.
Tales from the Front (36) tells the story of Frank Wilcox, a native of Victorian Bournemouth, who fought in the Great War. Private Wilcox had served with the local militia before joining the First Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. He came to France in autumn 1914, fighting at Hill 60 the next year, where he went missing, another plausible victim of poison gas on the evening of May 1st, 1915.
